RE: Rick Remender, Alleged Statutory Rape, and Jet Black

moneystcroix:

If your discomfort with the whole Captain America #22 issue is simply the fact that sex had happened between two consenting adults in the presence of alcohol, this isn’t for you. You’re free and completely entitled to hate that and view it with great disdain but my attitude and problem with the fandom is not because of people finding issue with that overused plot device to get two people to finally be comfortable enough to do it but because of people making claims that Jet Black is 14 years old (when she’s not) and thus stating that despite her even saying she’s beyond those years to dare accuse Remender writing a statutory rape scene and faulting Sam Wilson as a rapist. If you had any of these thoughts, this is for you. Before you continue your crusade, please at least let me provide you with some facts.

Let me first introduce you to Jet Black as she was first introduced in the series (Captain America v.7 #1):

That girl right there with that mischievous look is not a baby as many have claimed. She is clearly in her prepubescent years enjoying the treatment her father, Arnim (corrected the spelling because I didn’t realize I put Armin) Zola, is providing the capitalist captain.

Below is her brother as he was first introduced in the same exact page (Captain America v.7 #1 p.14 — cw: syringe/drill and torture):

Clearly the two siblings are not the same age, right? So why are there false rumors being spread around that Jet is 14? I honestly don’t know unless people believe Ian and Jet are the same person, which is silly, right? Apparently, not

Putting the rest beneath a cut because it gets lengthy because of timeline explanation thus is image heavy.

I think about pokemon in non-battle situations a lot. Like pokemon who have been trained/raised to be helpers and assistants than to be battle partners.

Pokemon visiting hospitals to cheer patients up like dogs and cats do. Or ones that help kids learn to read, speak, swim, go through therapy?! Even pokemon who’s abilities help owners with specific disabilities?!

I love thinking of pokemon outside of battle situations.

Service Pokemon!

SERVICE POKEMON!!!!

Female Thor and FalCap

So, I wasn’t going to weigh in on this because Im trying to be a new positive person with a zen thing or whatever but I just cant let it go that easily. I will attempt to express my feelings in a calm, positive way.

Recently Marvel announced that Thor Odinson would become unworthy of Mjolnir, his hammer, and a new Thor will prove themselves worthy of the mantle. This new Thor is a woman. This has apparently gotten some people in a rage for a diverse number of reasons ranging from “why change an established character” to “Thor is his name not a mantle”. (Interview here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=54083)

Then yesterday, they announced that because Steve Rogers had the super soldier serum sucked out of him and rapidly aged him to 95 years old, Sam Wilson, aka Falcon would be taking hold of the shield in his stead.

What I don’t understand is why people put so much value in their own opinions on matters like this. Why invest so much emotion into an industry that you know will do things like this in order to shake things up and make it interesting? And it’s most often from folks who don’t even read the comics. They see the headline “Thor is a woman” and “Cap is black” and their knee jerk reaction is “why?!”

Why not? Is it not apparent that these are fictional character based in a fictional world? Would they rather just the same old same old stories told over and over again? How about we just keep releasing number 1 of every book so that the characters never change.

I would have thought that in 2014 we would not be as hateful and pessimistic as I am seeing today. Instead of being informed or actually waiting to see how something turns out, we jump to conclusions and point fingers. “This is a ploy by Disney to make everything politically correct!” “This is just a scam to make headlines and sell more comics!”

So what! If you knew anything about comics you would know two important things: 1. Sales of comics have been steadily decreasing over the last decade. And 2. Characters change/die/disappear frequently and are replaced by someone and then come back as they were.

I can’t make the racist, sexist, homophobic people change their views. I can however be supportive of my industry and the artists that create the characters that I love, no matter what race, sex, or sexual orientation they happen to temporarily be. And yes, the changes of these iconic characters is temporary. Changes like this always are. At least seven different people have taken up the name “Captain America”. And does anyone remember Beta Ray Bill?

Im not hear to silence anyone from expressing their own opinion, but one thing I want to express is that opinions are not fact. They are not truth and they hold only as much weight as the person expressing them gives it. No one is holding a gun to your head and shoving it down your throat like a severed ear to use as evidence against you later. You are adults and you can decide whether ot not you want to buy and read these books.

Get over yourselves. We live in a diverse world.

If you see someone making ignorant comments about anything, do not engage.

There needs to be a phrase for “I acknowledge your apology and appreciate it but it does not make things better.” instead of just saying “It’s okay.” all the time.

I recognize the council has made an apology, but given that it is a stupid ass apology, I have elected to ignore it.
